High flying Leeds United made trip to Manchester to face City at the Regional Athletics Arena this Sunday.
The opening exchanges were mostly in midfield, with both teams unable to fashion a clear cut opportunity, on 8 minutes City broke quickly down the right, Johnston crossing into the box which met the foot of Goodwin whose shot towards the far post as centre half Hayley Sharp stretched on the line it came off her into the roof of the net, any fears of an own goal were allayed when the assistant referee confirmed at full time that the ball had crossed the line before Sharp got there.
Leeds they reacted well to the early set back and looked threatening on the counter, this brought about a blocked shot to the visitors after 12 minutes, but despite these promising positions they never created a clear cut chance to equalise.
Johnston went close for City from 18 yards out in the 18th minute, with Draycott tipping the ball wide.
City began to dictate the pace of play after halftime enjoying their best period with former Leeds player Sarah Danby beginning to have a real impact. From a Fliss Middleton cross she unleashed a drive which produced a wonderful save from Julianna Draycott to keep the ball out.
City extended their lead on 61 minutes, Krystle Johnston bent her run superbly to keep onside and get in behind the Leeds defence; Goodwin set the ball for Danielle Young to neatly pick out the top corner from ten yards out.
The game was over on 71 minutes when pressure from the City forward line forced Leeds into a mistake, a miss-kicked clearance landed at the feet of Danby, pushing the ball out of her feet with her first touch she spotted Draycott stranded and from around 25 yards out with her second touch she floated the ball over the helpless keeper into the back of the net.
Leeds forced a few more opportunities and shots on goal in the last remaining minutes all of which Brown was equal to.
“A great win and team performance today.” Leigh Wood said after the final whistle, “We matched Leeds all over the pitch, every player winning their individual battle, which enabled us to push on and control the game for large parts. Leeds had their chances but most went straight at our keeper, who dealt with them comfortably. We now look forward to the visit of Barnet next weekend. Well done Ladies.”
Leeds Manager Andy Burgess couldn’t hide his disappointment after the match “We’re very disappointed with today’s performance, we conceded early and just never got going. We’ve got some serious work to do in training during the week.”
